Students protest against cellphone tower in IIT-B

A cellphone tower set up recently at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Bombay, has become a bone of contention between students and institute authorities. Several students are against the tower, installed around two months ago on top of the C-wing of Hostel 14, and want it removed as they fear the radiation will have an adverse effect on them.

“We are worried about the harmful impact of radiation on our health. We want it removed,” a student said on condition of anonymity. “The consent or opinion of all students was not taken before signing the contract for installing the tower,” another student alleged. Around 400 students were part of a signature campaign against the tower. “The opinion of some students was sought, but everyone was against it.”

Ironically, it was an IIT-Bombay professor — Girish Kumar of the electrical engineering department — who had submitted a 30-page report on “cell tower radiation” to the Department of Telecommunications in December 2010. “In India, we have adopted very relaxed radiation norms of 4.7 W/m2 (watt per metre square) for GSM 900, whereas serious health effects have been noted at as low as 0.0001 W/m2. It’s not just human beings, cell tower radiation can also adversely effects birds, animals and environment. Though cell operators continue to claim that there are no health issues, it’s time we realised the seriousness of the health hazards due to radiation from cell towers,” the report says.

Save India- Adopt Better Cell Tower Radiation Norms

Purpose of the mail

The Indian government through department of telecommunications have invited opinion on “Effect of EMF radiation on human health” through their website “http://www.dot.gov.in/miscellaneous/imc.htm “. We want you to please be a part of this as it can not only affect you but your family and near dear ones. Please go through the following effects of cell tower radiation before mailing to them.

Summary of health effects due to cell tower radiation

1. Due to cell tower radiations, lot of people are suffering from various forms of cancer and tumor like salivary gland tumors, lymphoma, facial nerve tumors, skin, blood, testicular and breast cancer.
2. People who lived close to the cellular antennas face the highest incidences of the following disorders: fatigue, sleep disturbances, headaches, visual disruptions, irritability, hearing disruptions, skin problems, cardiovascular disorders and dizziness.
3. Cell tower radiations are causing a lot of environmental problems like disappearance of bees, drying up of fruits and plants. It creates navigational problems for many birds. Also the agricultural output has been reduced at many places where cell towers have been installed.

To avoid all these or to minimize the effects, the radiation norms should be brought down to .001 w/m2 from the present levels of 9.2w/m2. This is what we should ask the government to formalize.

Towers on schools raise concern

Times of India
Feb 4, 2011 - Page 6

MUMBAI: Cell phone towers perched atop school buildings are causing intense bouts of anxiety amongst parents and teachers alike after a central government committee concluded that radiation from these towers can cause serious ailments.

In recent years, a whole array of schools, ranging from those run by the state to those sporting the "international" tag, have allowed mobile towers to be erected on their rooftops.

Teachers at GM International School, Goregaon, complain there are up to 15 mobile towers on the school premises. The school authorities, though, differ. "We don't have mobile towers on campus, but mobile poles that connect one line with the next," said Gunita Malhotra, a trustee of the school. "The government has tested the radiation emitted by the poles and found it within permissible limits."

Girish Kumar, a professor in the electrical engineering department of IIT-Bombay, calls these "permissible limits" pathetic. "Our studies have shown that one thousandth of the radiation prescribed by the government causes severe health hazards," said Kumar.

In another instance, a mobile tower has existed at the Central Railway Employees High School in Parel for at least three years, without anyone knowing how it got there. Even the principal, Madhuri Hatekar, was unaware of its existence until alerted by the youth wing of the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena.

"This is wrong. We are worried about our children. Such towers should not be put up in a school," said a parent.

The tower also caught CR officials by surprise. "A digital communications firm called Tikona approached Railtel, a PSU owned by the railways, for permission to set up mobile towers. In 2008, the railways gave the firm consent to set up a tower at Apprentice Mechanical Building in Parel. No consent was given to set up the tower on the school," said Vidyadhar Malegaonkar, chief spokesperson, CR. Sources say the Apprentice Mechanical Hostel and the school are housed in the same building.

Mobiles pose health risk, says govt panel

Times of India
Feb 3, 2011, Page 1

NEW DELHI: Radiation from mobile phones and towers poses serious health risks, including loss of memory, lack of concentration, disturbance in the digestive system and sleep disturbances, according to an inter-ministerial committee formed by the ministry of communications and information technology to study the hazards posed by mobile phones.

The committee has also attributed the disappearance of butterflies, bees, insects and sparrows vanishing from big cities to mobile phone-related radiation.

The eight-member committee, which included representatives from the health ministry, department of biotechnology and member secretary, DoT, has recommended that mobile phones not adhering to standard levels of specific absorption rate (SAR) - a measure of the amount of radiofrequency energy absorbed by the body while using a phone -- should be barred.

It has said mobile towers should not be installed near high density residential areas, schools, playgrounds and hospitals. "The localized SAR value as per the Indian guidelines standard is 2 watt per kg, averaged over a six minute period and using a 10 gram average mass. With higher SAR values of mobile handsets the public could potentially receive much higher radiofrequency exposure. We have recommended that SAR levels to be lowered down to 1.6 watt/kg, as prescribed by the Federal Communication Commission of US," said a member.

Dr R S Sharma, ICMR scientist who represented the health ministry on the committee, said the findings are based on case studies presented by different experts. He added that the recommendations would be used to formulate a national policy and guidelines on electromagnetic frequency (EMF) radiation for telecom towers.

"In the case of a person using a cellphone, most of the heating occurs on the surface of the head, causing its temperature to increase by a fraction of a degree. The brain blood flow is capable of disposing this excess by increasing the local blood flow and increasing body temperature," states the report. It says that the non-thermal effects of cellphone use — attributed to the induced electromagnetic effects inside the body's biological cells — are more harmful.

"People who are chronically exposed to low-level wireless antenna emissions and users of mobile handsets have reported feeling several unspecific symptoms during and after its use, ranging from burning and tingling sensation in the skin of the head, fatigue, sleep disturbances, dizziness, lack of concentration, ringing in the ears, reaction time, loss of memory, headache, disturbance in digestive system and heart palpitation," the report says.

The committee was chaired by Ram Kumar, advisor (technology), department of telecommunications, and had Arvind Duggal from the department of biotechnology and R N Jindal from the environment ministry among its other members.

Member scientist, ICMR R S Sharma said that compared to Europeans, Indian cellphone users are more at risk for adverse affect of radiation due the country's hot tropical climate, low body mass index, and low fat content. "We have recommended amendment in the Indian Telegraph Act 1885 and rules so that only mobile handsets satisfying radiation standards should be permitted in the country," he said.

The report suggests that children, adolescents and pregnant women should avoid excessive use of cellphones. People in general should use hands-free technologies to minimize the contact of the head with cell phone. "People having active medical implants should keep their cellphone at least 30 cm away from the implant," it adds.

Said Girish Kumar, professor in the department of electrical engineering at IIT Bombay, whose research on hazards of cellphone use was taken as a reference for the committee decision, "There is a 400% increase in the risk of brain cancer among teenagers using cell phones for long periods. The younger the child, the deeper is the penetration of electromagnetic radiation as children`s skulls are thinner.

Another government-funded study on radiation from mobile phones and towers at the Jawaharlal Nehru University ( JNU) found that the exposure to radiation from mobile towers and mobile phones could have an adverse impact on male fertility and pose health hazards by depleting the defence mechanism of cells.

India has worst radiation norms: report

Mumbai: An Inter Ministerial Report submitted to the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has recommended the cutting down of mobile phone tower radiation by one-tenth of the present level.

The 5.4 lakh mobile phone towers in the country pose a huge threat to the health of the citizens. Experts say that the amount of radiation emitted from these towers in a day, is equivalent to putting one's body in an oven for 19 minutes!

India has the worst cell phone tower radiation norms in the world. The upper limit is so high that within 2 years the health of 1 crore Indians could be affected.

But if the recommendations of the Inter Ministerial Report on cell phone tower radiation submitted to the Department of Telecommunications are accepted, then soon there will be stricter restrictions on towers being installed near high density residential areas and schools.

At present we follow the International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNRIP) guidelines for radiation, which allow a radiation rate of 9.2 watt per sq meter to be emitted. The report recommends this level should come down by one-tenth. At the same time the report clearly states that the safe limit for our health is 1000 times less than even the recommended limit.

Experts, like Prof Girish Kumar, Head of Department for Electrical Engineering, IIT Bombay who have been studying the harmful effects of radiation for three decades, aren't very optimistic.

“The number of people having health problems is more in the areas where radiation levels are high. We have adopted the worst radiation norm in the entire world,” said Prof Kumar.

The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has flagged off a large scale research project to examine the health impact of mobile tower radiation

“It is the largest study in country we will enroll 4500 people. This is a prospective study. Generally only one aspect is covered in such studies but we are covering all aspects and all disorders be it neurological, cancer, cardiac, ENT-related, reproductive, behavioral in this study,” informed Dr RS Sharma, Deputy DG, ICMR.

Meanwhile, The DoT has not set any time frame for responding to this report.

They have mentioned several health hazards due to radiation and
recommended to use 1/10th of the existing radiation norms, pl see
Section 5.7, page 33.

However, according to my study and calculations, they should adopt lower than this value, which is 0.1 W/sq.meter immediately and which should
be reduced further to 0.01 W/sq.meter in 1 to 2 years, which will give
time for operators for smooth network operations.

Please spare time to go through it and educate people and write to
the above concerned people to adopt safe radiation norms.

With regards.

Cancer victim on Cell Tower Radiation

A cancer victim from Usha Kiran building after five cancer cases in the same building. "We are always told to give proof that we fell ill because of mobile tower radiation. We ask all of you to prove that we did not fall ill because of mobile tower radiation"

Radiation Health Hazards from cell phones and mobile towers - Myth or Reality

Bombay Telephone User’s Association (BTUA) on its 25th celebration organized a meet on 29 Jan 2010 on "Consumer Awareness and Radiation Health Hazards from cell phones and mobile towers - Myth or Reality", where experts from various fields very invited.

At the panel were experts from Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), Telecom User Group (TUG), Prof Girish Kumar, IIT Bombay and others, however no official representative appeared from the Department of Telecommunications (DOT) and the Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI).

Prof. Girish Kumar gave a talk on "Better Radiation Norms for Cell Phones and Cell Towers "

Better Radiation Norms for Cell Phones and Cell Towers

Presentation on Biological Effects of Cell Tower Radiation

Biological Effects of Cell Tower Radiation

Towards the end, a lot of victims came forward and spoke about their health problems and the increasing number of cancer cases among their neighbours.

One lady developed a meningioma (benign tumour) and had recovered, however the tumour has recurred back. The number of cancer cases has risen to six in her building and these cases have appeared on the 5th, 6th (2 cases), 7th, 8th and 10th floor of the same building, and some others feel sick. All these houses are in direct line of sight from the towers installed on the7th Floor of opposite building located at a distance of about 50 meter.

Another lady (a doctor by profession) has developed ovarian cancer and mentioned that nine ladies have developed cancer in a row. Even they have several towers very close and opposite to their building.

Yet another person mentioned that there were towers atop his house (10m distance) and his grandson becomes epileptic when he is at home.

Many others complained of severe headaches, buzzing sensation in the head, fatigue, involuntarily hand movements, heavy heads, severe body pains, sleep disturbance and so on. All of them mentioned that they feel better when they are away from towers.

It is really disheartening when you see such cases yourself. People are really suffering and are very angry now. However, the rules which have been framed by the industry has made the common man totally helpless!

We don't know what the government and industriy are waiting for - Perhaps a cancer boom! I really hope not.

Testimony of a victim of EMF radiation:

Testimony of a victim of EMF radiation:

Munich, Germany (Name kept anonymous):

A few years ago I became aware of myself being sensitive to electromagnetic radiation.

First I felt dizzy and sick in my stomach, Then I had difficulty to fall asleep and my sleeping spans became shorter and shorter. I felt agitated and restless. My normally low blood pressure skyrocketed. My heart sometimes was racing. Doctors didn´t find anything wrong with my body and didn´t offer any cure.

I found out myself what caused my symptoms:

Emissions from celltowers nearby, also my neighbour`s digital cordless phones and wireless-lan computers with basestations and modems both radiating 24 hours a day. I asked my neighbours to use cables for the computer and the new ECO DECT phones. Most of my neighbours responded, but not all. This gave me already some relief. I often fled to the countryside where my symptoms miraculously vanished and reemerged after coming home.

In the meantime my symptoms are getting worse and include high pitched sounds in the ear (Tinnitus), joint pains, nausea, heart palpitations, short term memory loss etc. When my symptoms become unbearable I go to sleep in my car in the underground garage or in a nearby wood.

There are people who can´t work anymore in this sickening environment and are applying for their pensions as young as fourty years old. They are acknowledged as being disabled but not because of Electrohypersensitivity, but of psychic problems.

The much praised wireless revolution is creating living hell on earth for me and many of my friends. The German government does not care about the ca. 9 % electrosensitive people who are fleeing their homes to escape the antennas, as long as the majority is buying their lies about the harmlessness of microwave radiation. Studies have shown that 50% of the Germans have sleeping problems, children have sicknesses only known by elderly people in earlier generations, but any context with microwave radiation is officially denied.

I know of course that this is a global problem and India is affected as well. It is high time that people awake to this danger to life.

Mobile Tower Radiation and Plants

Thought only humans were susceptible to Cell Tower radiation? Well the situation is worst than imagined by most people. Birds, bees, plants, mammals etc which act as ecological indicators to show alterations in our ecosystem have all been affected. We all know when these are disturbed there is some major calamity associated with it.

One such example was observed recently by Prof. Girish Kumar in Gurgaon, Delhi.

"I went to the farm house near Delhi-Gurgaon toll naka, where 4 cell towers are installed. The owner of the farm house told me that the output of most of the fruit bearing trees has drastically reduced in the last 2 years. Before the towers were erected the plants beared more than a hundred fruits and there were butterflies all around. And now only one or two fruits are seen in the entire tree and butterflies have completely vanished. Also, trees in the main beam of cell tower antenna look dull and withered compared to the plants away from the tower and not in main beam of antenna"

When asked to the person concerned, he said no changes have been made in terms of maintenance of the plants. They are watered and manured the same way like before.

The picture was taken at the farm house and shows that only those plants looked dull and dried which were close to and in the main beam of the antenna. When the radiation levels were measured in the farm, the levels were as high as 0 dBm = 70,686microW/m2 = 700 times more radiation than proposed by the ICNIRP guidleine which has been adopted by the Indian govt. as safe level of radiation.

Several such cases have been seen in other parts of the world and calls for immediate steps to adopt tighter radiation norms to save humans, animals, birds, environment and mother earth.

Mobile tower radiation a major health hazard

CNN IBN News Coverage - aired on 9th DEC 2010

All the transmitting towers, such as AM and FM towers, TV towers, cell towers, etc. emit RF/microwave radiation continuously. Also, Wi-Fi (wireless Internet), wireless computers, cordless phones and their base units, cell phones and all other wireless devices emit microwave radiation. A cell phone that is ON but not in use is also radiating.

Cell phones operate within the frequency band of 800 MHz, 900 MHz and 1800 MHz and the latest 3G technology works between 1900 -2200 MHz. Computers and laptops operate within the frequency range of 1000 -- 3600MHz, and most Wi-Fi systems and some cordless phones operate around 2450 MHz, which is same frequency as that of a microwave oven! The growing use of wireless communication in the last decade has introduced concerns about health risks from the so called man made electro smog. Various epidemiological and experimental studies have been carried out and the results have shown to have a close relation between biological effects and
Electromagnetic radiation (Sage Cindy et al 2009).

Microwave radiation effect can be classified as - thermal and non-thermal. The thermal effect has been largely studied and refers to the heat that is generated due to absorption of microwave radiation. Being exposed to the thermal effect could cause fatigue, cataracts and reduced mental concentration. Research is going on to study the non-thermal effects of radiation, and it has been associated with affecting the cell membrane permeability. Sadly the current exposure safety standards are purely based on the thermal effect while ignoring the non-thermal effects of
radiation.

Principle of microwave heating is similar to that of a microwave oven where the water in the food content is heated first. Likewise microwave absorption effect is much more significant by the body parts which contain more fluid (water, blood, etc.) like the brain which consists of about 90% water. Effect is more pronounced where the movement of the fluid is less, for example, eyes, brain, joints, heart, abdomen, etc. The effect has shown to be much more severe for children and pregnant women.

Of late there are lots of reports coming out on how radiation through mobile towers causes cancer, though cell phone companies maintain that there is nothing conclusive on this subject.

The effectiveness or seriousness of the issue has not been realized among the common man yet as one can not see or smell or hear microwave and its effect on health is noted after a long period of time. Therefore, majority of the people tend to have casualness towards personal protection.Unfortunately, ignorance and non-awareness adds to this misery and all of us are absorbing this slow poison unknowingly.

Cell Phones and Cell Tower Radiation Effect on Children

Coverage on TV9 News Channel - 9 Dec 2010

The show is more focussed on health impacts on children from Mobile Tower Radiation and Mobile Phones / Cell Phones

Children are more susceptible to radiation as their skulls are thinner and still developing. A pregnant women and fetus are susceptible as these radiations can pass through the placental barrier and affect developing fetus.

Also, a large number of brain cancer cases have been reported among children on the same side where they held their cell phones. Tumour the size of a tennis ball have also been reported near the ears of several cell phones users who started using phones in their early teens.

Study by Dr. Om Gandhi explains why, children are in much bigger danger of getting a brain tumor from EMR ; Brain tumors have now taken over leukemia as the biggest cause of death amongst children.

When radiation hits the head, it penetrates the skull. The experiment done by Dr Om Gandhi back in 1997 showed how radiation penetrates the skull of an adult (25%), 10 year old (50%) and a 5 year old (75%). The younger the child the deeper the penetration due to the fact their skulls are thinner and still developing.

Cell towers likely sources of radiation, disease: Report

Times of India - 7 Dec 2010 ; MUMBAI: Cellphone operators have long denied their transmitting towers atop buildings or on highways have any adverse bearing on the health of humans or animals, despite several studies across the world concluding the contrary. Now a report for the Department of Telecommunication by a faculty of the Indian Institute of Technology, Powai, reinforces what scientists have long held—that areas around cellphone towers are high-radiation and consequently high-risk zones. Moreover, it recommends that India, which has very "relaxed radiation norms", must raise the safety bar.

Girish Kumar, professor, electrical engineering department of the Powai institute, who visited rooftops of several buildings and measured radiation on places with cell towers mounted, said: "These towers transmit radiation 24x7, so people living nearby will receive 10,000 to 10,000,000 times stronger signal than required for mobile communication. In India, crores of people reside in these high radiation zones."

Kumar noted the cell phone industry was becoming "another cigarette industry, which for long kept claiming smoking is not harmful. In fact, cellphone/tower radiation is worse than smoking as one cannot see it or smell it, and its effect on health is noted after a long period of exposure. Unfortunately, all of us are absorbing this slow poison unknowingly."

For instance, Kumar visited the apartment of a lady detected with cancer a year after a cellphone tower was installed in the vicinity. A hand-held broadband radiation monitoring device, taken near the windows, detected radiation levels were around 0.007069 W/m2. India has adopted a radiation norm of 4.7 W/m2, but the study noted serious health effects at as low a level of 0.0001 W/m2. Though India adheres to the radiation density limit set by the International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP), Kumar observed Indians faced an added threat: radiation from multiple towers. "One should know the actual radiation pattern (unfortunately not made public) to calculate exact radiation density at a point," he noted. One of the first steps he recommended was tightening radiation norms and reducing number of towers. Many countries in the world have adopted much stricter maximum radiation density values of 0.001 to 0.24 W/m2.

Cellphones may put your child at risk of brain tumor

DNA - Dec 7 2010

Absorption of electromagnetic radiation from a cell phone (frequency being GSM 900 MHz) penetrates the skull of an adult by 25%, that of a 10-year-old by 50% and a five-year-old by 75%, says a report on cell tower radiation which has been submitted by an Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Bombay, professor to the department of telecommunications (DOT).

“The younger the child, the deeper is the penetration due to the fact that their skulls are thinner and still developing. Hence, it’s critical that children under 16 use cell phones only for short essential calls as they have much bigger danger of getting a brain tumor,” said the 30-page report written by Girish Kumar, electrical engineering department, IIT, Bombay.

Stating that currently there are over 50 crore cell phone users and nearly 4.4 lakh cell phone towers to meet the communication demand in India, the report recommends tightening the radiation norms, which must be simultaneously cost-effective without causing inconvenience to the users.

“A person should not use a cell phone for more than 18 to 24 minutes daily. This information is not commonly known to the people in India, so millions use cell phones for over an hour per day without realising its associated health hazards,” states the report.

“In India, we have adopted very relaxed radiation norms of 4.7 W/m2 (watt per metre square) for GSM 900, whereas serious health effects have been noted at as low as 0.0001 W/m2. It’s not just human beings, cell tower radiation can also adversely effect birds, animals and the environment. Though cell operators continue to claim that there are no health issues, it’s time we realised the seriousness of the health hazards due to radiation from cell phones and cell towers,” said Kumar.

Expert Counsel Meet - Mumbaiites learn about the effect of radiation from towers

Concerned citizens call for a expert committee meet to create awareness and understand implications of long term cell tower radiation exposure.

On a Sunday afternoon (October 11, 2010) residents at the Nepean Sea Road and Altamount Road organized an expert committee meet to get definitive answers to the increasing problem of radiation from mobile phones and mobile towers.

The Nepean Sea Road Citizen’s Forum and the Altamount Road Residents’ Committee held a meeting where various experts shared their opinions about the effects of radiation emitted from mobile phones and mobile towers.

At the panel were (from right to left)Mr. Prakash Patel (resident of Usha Kiran), Mr. Vikas Bonde from Loop Mobile, Prof Girish Kumar from IIT Bombay, Dr SM Desai from TIFR, Shri AL Pandey (TERM - Telecommunication Enforcement Resource Monitoring Cell), Mr. C.U. Singh (Senior Advocate for the Operators)

Mr. Prakash Patel spoke about four cases of cancer reported among residents of Usha Kiran building who live in the main beam of the cell tower antennas that are located opposite to their building.

Mr. Vikas Bonde from Loop Mobile stated studies which show no serious damage from towers but did report minor health effects from towers.

Prof. Girish Kumar from IIT Bombay said, "The current guidelines for radiation exposure are outdated. India currently follows the International Commission for Non Ionising Radiation Protection (ICNRIP). The guidelines were set in 1998, when mobile phones were just introduced. How can we continue to follow them when other nations have moved on?”. The ICNIRP guidelines mandate that exposure to radio frequency fields (of the 1800MHz spectrum) is 9.2 watts per square metre. However, in countries like Russia, Bulgaria and Hungary the accepted level is 0.02 watts per square metre-which is a hundred times lesser.

Prof. Kumar also mentioned that if the current emitted power from towers were reduced 10 fold, the problem will be reduced by a much greater extend to which the Loop mobile person seemed to comply with.

Mr Hari Shetty (from Mobile Towers Grievance Forum) and Prof. Kumar are united in their demand for stricter guidelines. Shetty said, “The state should at least frame policies to regulate the invisible radiation.”

Also, the problem is that people don’t know much about the subject and the information available will confuse the layman. Hence, it is important to know the truth before they agree to install these towers.

Mr. AL Pandey, Deputy Director-General, Telecom Enforcement, Resources and Monitoring cell (TERM) agreed with this assessment and said, “The network providers need to understand that business cannot be done at the cost of people’s lives. Hence, we’ve stepped in and are doing our own study before taking action against errant companies”.

However, Senior Advocate, Mr. C. U Singh from Delhi, who has represented the BMC, Air India, TATA Motors, Reliance put forward studies which showed no/negligible damage with long term exposure and also animal studies which showed brain damge and other serious health problems. Mr. Singh believes that people should search for the answers themselves and decide if radiation can lead to serious damage.

Dr. Desai from Tata Memorial Hospital summarized the session and further believes the need for stricter guideline to be adopted.

The Question-Answer session was particularly interesting as residents came forward and mentioned that they have towers of 7 different operators facing their apartment and some often heard noises which were not heard elsewhere. Another concerned resident mentioned that they had about 30 towers facing their house.
